Post WW2 built Workboats built for the Royal Australian Navy

After the war there were a few launches built that are similar but not the same as the 40' Army Workboats.

AWB4002 to AWB4007 were so-called '1963 design' workboats built by Phoenix Shipbuilding at Launceston between 1963 and 1964. One launch, AWB4002 and AWB4008 was sold by public auction on 15 February 2013. The current status of the others is unknown. AWB4003 was based at Jervis Bay in 1983.

AWB4009 and AWB4010 were built by the Williamstown Naval Dockyard in 1965. They had a taller wheelhouse and a short cabin. A tow hook was mounted near midships. AWB4009 is believed to be in Victoria. AWB4010 was sold by public auction on 15 February 2013.

The launch that became known as AWB4011 was built on speculation by Lars Halvorsen Sons Pty Ltd at Ryde, Sydney in 1966. This launch also differed from the standard Army workboat having flare at the stern and no forward coachhouse. She was used as a tender for the trials of the 12-metre America's Cup contender Gretel before being purchased by the Royal Australian Navy. Also named Sobraon for a period, she now has the number 0379.

Shipwright Mal Edmonds remembers that he worked on two workboats for the Navy built by B.J. Halvorsen Ltd at Berry's Bay, Sydney. They were launched some time between the years 1954 and 1959. Bjarne Juell Halvorsen was one of the sons of Lars Halvorsen who started his own business building boats in the 1940s. There was much competition between the two Halvorsen firms as to who could finish boats the better. The names/numbers of the two B.J.Halvorsen boats that were built for the RAN are not yet known.
